Fire Truck Shortage Delays Equipment for Local Departments

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – Local fire departments are experiencing significant delays in acquiring new equipment due to a nationwide backlog, which is resulting in waiting periods of years, rather than the usual months, for fire trucks.

In Aiken County, one fire truck is approaching 20 years in service, having been ordered in 2005, with firefighters expecting its replacement not to arrive until 2027.

According to local fire officials, wait times have increased from the typical 12 to 18 months to now 24 to 36 months for new orders.

Extended Wait Times Challenge Departments

“Currently, we have two trucks on order. We finalized a contract for one in 2024 with a delivery set for 2027, and the second was ordered in July of 2025, scheduled for completion in late 2028,” stated Charles Kneece, Chief of the GVW Fire Department.

This extended delivery timeline marks a notable shift from previous years.

Exploring Alternative Solutions

The lengthy delays are prompting departments to explore other options. Some are forced to purchase equipment that does not fully meet their requirements or to seek assistance from neighboring departments.

“If a truck goes down, I may have to contact surrounding fire departments for assistance,” Kneece explained, emphasizing that the specialized nature of fire trucks makes support challenging.

Concerns Over Community Safety

Fire officials stressed the necessity of dependable equipment for the safety of the community. “Ensuring our community is safe for residents is paramount, and having reliable equipment is crucial for all communities across the CSRA,” stated Brazier.

While Congress has initiated investigations into the fire truck shortage, no significant federal legislation or new funding has been approved to address the backlog, leaving local departments in anticipation of new vehicles.
