Understanding DOT Physical Examinations
Truck drivers have been undergoing DOT physical examinations for many years, yet a significant number fail to grasp the seriousness of failing an exam.
Facing Unexpected Health Issues
Robert Palm, an owner-operator with Roadrunner Freight, expressed the gravity of such a situation: “You’re not just losing your job; you have financial and family obligations to consider when you can’t secure a new medical certificate.” Palm, also the founder of the charity Trucker’s Final Mile, recently faced a health scare himself.
A Surprising Diagnosis
Though he weighed under 160 pounds and believed he was healthy, Palm discovered during his two-year medical certification process that his blood glucose levels were elevated. The doctor informed him that he would not receive a medical certification, and further testing revealed he had type 2 diabetes, a diagnosis that left him stunned.
Making Lifestyle Changes
With two weeks remaining on his current certification, Palm made immediate dietary adjustments and increased his exercise, primarily through walking. He also began taking prescribed medication to manage his blood sugar levels. After making these changes, he returned to the clinic and received a six-month certification but was advised that further improvements were necessary to secure a long-term certification.
Entering the Fit to Pass Program
At an industry conference in Birmingham, Alabama, Palm learned about the Fit to Pass program, which helps commercial drivers prepare for physical and DOT exams. He was linked with a health coach named Diana, who guided him in healthy eating and exercise, emphasizing the importance of a structured regimen.
Overcoming Challenges with Support
Regular contact with Diana proved invaluable for Palm, who admitted he was initially clueless about nutrition. Under her guidance, he learned to distinguish between carbohydrates and proteins and made significant changes to his diet. Ultimately, his efforts paid off—when he returned to the clinic several months later, his blood sugar level had decreased significantly, earning him a one-year certification.
Advocating for Driver Health
Palm’s journey has ignited a passion for advocating for better health resources for drivers. Despite some truck stops improving food options and amenities, he emphasizes that access to essential health supplies, such as diabetes testing kits, remains inadequate. “It’s vital we address these gaps in driver health support,” he asserted, underscoring the need for trucking companies to take action.
