Preparing for Winter Early
Though summer has not officially begun, the Sterling Public Works Department is already making plans for the upcoming winter snowfall.
New Snowplow Acquisition
During the city council meeting on May 18, the Sterling City Council bypassed the bidding process to approve the purchase and installation of a 5200 Series Snow Wing snowplow from Bonnell Industries for $28,999.23.
Usage of the Snowplow
Public Works Superintendent Brad Schrader noted, “This new plow will operate in the downtown area and features hydraulic wings on either side. It will also assist in clearing the sidewalks on the Avenue G bridge.”
Pickup Trucks Purchase
The council also approved the purchase of two pickup trucks without going through the usual bidding process—one for the public works department and the other for the wastewater treatment facility.

The city council authorized the procurement of two 2026 3/4-ton pickup trucks from Sterling Chevrolet, costing $61,757 for one and $53,820 for the other.
Collective Bargaining Agreement Approved
The council ratified a revised collective bargaining agreement with IAFF Local 2301, which represents firefighters in the Sterling Fire Department. Changes include extending the residency requirement from 20 minutes to 30 minutes from the fire station.
Final Remarks on Negotiations
City Manager Scott Shumard mentioned that proposals concerning sick time were removed by the IAFF negotiators at the last moment. “They opted to adhere to the existing terms. I believe it’s a solid contract that satisfies everyone involved,” Shumard stated.
