Ghanaian Woman Leaves Pharmacist Job to Pursue Truck Driving

Esther, a Ghanaian woman, has left her career as a pharmacist to forge a path as a truck driver, a field traditionally dominated by men.

Esther shared that she has always admired her husband, who works as a truck driver, which inspired her to learn the trade. She asked him to teach her, and he agreed, provided she completed her Medical Counter Assistant (MCA) training. After two years of working at Twifo Praso Government Hospital post-training, Esther decided to resign and fully pursue her passion for driving trucks.

In an interview with DJ Nyame on the SVTV Africa YouTube channel, Esther reflected on her journey. She mentioned that office work did not appeal to her, which ultimately motivated her to pursue truck driving. Training for her new career took approximately six months under her husband’s guidance.

“I didn’t have an interest in office work and so I resigned from my job to become an active truck driver,” she stated.

Now, as a prominent female truck driver in Ghana, Esther is gaining recognition for her determination. She works alongside her husband on long trips, sharing driving responsibilities as needed. She aspires to own her own truck one day, revealing a preference for heavy-duty vehicles.

Community Support for Esther

Upon learning about her story, many Ghanaians praised Esther for her courage and commitment to following her dreams. Comments on social media celebrated her determination and resilience.

“She’s my mate back in school. She’s a very determined and brave woman,” said one supporter, highlighting her willingness to learn and take on challenges.

In another inspiring story, a 25-year-old Ghanaian named Odamea Amoako, who graduated in 2018 as a pharmacist, has also chosen to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer by enrolling in Mountcrest University College.
