Investment in Emergency Equipment and Proposed Commercial Hub
Weyburn City Council’s agenda for tonight features a significant investment in emergency apparatus and a potential new commercial development near the general hospital.
Aerial Platform Ladder Truck Proposal
The Council will vote on a proposal to award a tender for a new aerial platform ladder truck for the Weyburn Fire Department. The recommended unit is a 2026 Pierce Ascendant with a 110-foot platform, priced at $2,530,837.
Current Ladder Truck Issues
An assessment by Acting Fire Chief Mike Wock indicates that the existing ladder truck, a 2009 model, is nearing the end of its operational lifespan and has been experiencing maintenance and reliability concerns. Funding for the new truck will come from a combination of a down payment in the 2026 budget and further payments.
Public Works Department Upgrades
In addition to the fire truck, Monday night’s meeting will also address several fleet upgrades for the Public Works department. They seek approval for a five-year lease on a 2026 Truvac Paradigm to replace a 2007 hydrovac unit, at an estimated cost of $9,927 per month.
New Equipment Recommendations
Further recommendations include leasing a new Bomag compactor for the landfill at a monthly rate of $17,900 over five years, and awarding a tender for a new Ford F450 with a landscaper box to Commercial Truck Equipment for $112,815.
Potential Development Around the Hospital
New retail and dining options may be on the horizon near the Weyburn General Hospital. The Council will consider the first reading of a bylaw amendment to rezone land on 5th Avenue North from Residential Semi-Detached (R2) to Highway Commercial (HC). This application, submitted by Kenjo Holdings Ltd., proposes a strip mall and a drive-through restaurant, aimed at serving hospital staff and visitors.
Green Municipal Fund Application and Cemetery Bylaw Updates
If the first reading is approved, a public hearing about the development will be scheduled for the regular council meeting on March 9th. Additionally, the Council is expected to support a pre-application for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund, seeking funding for a new “Urban Forestry Management Plan” to evaluate the city’s tree canopy. The overall project is estimated at $131,000, with the grant potentially covering 80% of the costs, leaving the city with a balance of over $26,000 to pay.
Lastly, an updated Cemetery Bylaw will also be discussed, focusing on clarifying regulations regarding monument heights and the types of items permitted on graves to improve maintenance and aesthetics.
The meeting will commence at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
