Enhancing Driver Comfort through Improved Truck Design
Many issues related to driver discomfort can be alleviated through the advancement of truck design and additional features. Historically, trucks prioritized utility over comfort. However, contemporary cab designs now focus on the needs of drivers, incorporating ergonomic seating and advanced tilt-steering options to make driving less exhausting and physically taxing.
Revolutionary Advancements by Volvo Trucks
A significant milestone was achieved with the launch of Volvo Trucks’ leading automated transmission, I-Shift, in January 2007. This innovation relieved drivers from the strenuous task of shifting heavy gears. Recently, Volvo has also introduced Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) in North America, further modernizing the driving experience to resemble that of a passenger car.
Transforming the Driving Experience
“Historically, steering a truck required considerable effort. Road irregularities would directly affect the steering column and strain the driver’s body, necessitating constant adjustments to keep the truck on course,” explained Fredrik Klevenfeldt, director of brand and marketing communications at Volvo Trucks North America. “The challenges posed by wind shear strained shoulder and wrist joints, while heavy loads at low speeds demanded significant effort to manage the steering wheel. Volvo Dynamic Steering addresses all these concerns.”
Improved Safety and Comfort with VDS
The VDS system enhances the overall driving experience by prioritizing safety, comfort, and reducing fatigue. It monitors steering input up to 2,000 times per second and uses an electric motor to counteract external influences, such as uneven road conditions and steering vibrations.
Easing Low-Speed Maneuvering
When reversing at low speeds or making tight maneuvers, steering wheel resistance is decreased by 85%. Additionally, the steering wheel automatically returns to the center once the driver’s grip loosens, minimizing repetitive motions. At higher speeds, VDS aids in maintaining direction, even on rough terrain and during windy conditions.
A Game Changer for Long-Distance Drivers
“One of the primary advantages of VDS is its capacity to reduce driver fatigue during long hauls,” Klevenfeldt remarked. “It reflects Volvo Trucks’ ongoing commitment to improving driver safety and comfort, and it represents a significant advancement in technology. VDS is uniquely available in North America, promising to significantly impact drivers engaged in the challenging task of transporting goods across the continent.”
