Transition to Trucking
Troy Carroll transitioned into the trucking industry after a successful career in Moto-Cross and team management. After selling off the majority of his team’s equipment, he wisely chose to keep the prime mover, a black Freightliner Argosy.
Family Roots in Trucking
This decision may have been influenced by his father, Vince, who spent over four decades in the trucking business, instilling a passion for trucks in Troy. “The prime mover was just sitting there, and a friend suggested I get a trailer to start delivering for him,” Troy recalls. He obtained his semi license just a day before embarking on his first journey from Brisbane to a mining site in Roma Logistics Hub, central Queensland.
Family Business Growth
As the business grew, Vince joined Troy as a subcontractor, bringing years of expertise from his time managing Carroll Truck Sales Toowoomba, as well as operating refrigerated transport. “I then acquired his truck, and he worked with me for a while, allowing us to add a third truck to our fleet,” Troy explains. Realizing the need for financial management, he invited Vince to become their Financial Controller.
Expanding Fleet
The business has expanded significantly, now boasting 23 pieces of equipment with three new trucks on order. They plan to add various types of trailers, including flat tops and side-loaders, to enhance their service capabilities.
Family Involvement
Troy’s 18-year-old daughter recently started working in the office, marking the involvement of three generations of the family in the business, alongside 18 employees.
Diversification into Logistics
Last year, the company ventured into third-party logistics (3PL) by establishing a new facility in Yatala. They now offer end-to-end service, including temporary storage for goods delivered from shipping containers before distributing them to customers. “We retrieve containers from the port, unpack them, and store the products for delivery,” Troy states. Currently using subcontractors, they plan to acquire their own sideloaders in the future for greater control over operations.
Future Growth Plans
Troy expresses a strong desire to continue growing the business over the next eight to ten years, aiming to offer comprehensive services for customers. “I was taught the value of hard work and I invest the same energy into this business as I did in racing,” he shares, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high service standards and building long-term relationships with companies that have supported them.
