Trucking Industry Job Gains in December 2022
In December 2022, the trucking sector saw an increase of approximately 2,100 employees compared to November, as reported by seasonally adjusted data from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).
Employment Statistics
The DOL’s final report for the 2022 truck transportation sector indicated that the workforce grew to 1,601,500 in December, up from 1,599,400 in November and 1,598,800 in October.
Salary and Work Hours
Data revealed a slight decrease in average hourly wages, dropping by one cent to $29.67 in November 2022. Meanwhile, the average weekly hours worked increased to 40.8, up from 41.3 in October. December’s salary and work-hour data has yet to be published.
Overall Job Market Performance
The overall job market in the U.S. added a robust 223,000 positions in December, reflecting a healthy economy despite the Federal Reserve’s aggressive interest rate hikes aimed at curbing inflation. This growth caused the unemployment rate to decrease from 3.6% to 3.5%, matching a 53-year low. However, the December increase in jobs was the smallest in two years, suggesting a possible cooling of the labor market.
Future Economic Outlook
While current trends indicate a sustainable labor market, uncertainty remains regarding economic conditions for the upcoming year. Many economists predict a recession in the latter half of 2023 as a consequence of the Fed’s rate hikes. The central bank expects unemployment to rise to 4.6% by year-end, although mortgage rates have also impacted consumer borrowing considerably.
Industry-Specific Job Gains
In terms of specific sectors, health care led the way with 74,000 new jobs, followed by leisure and hospitality with 67,000. Although retailers added 9,000 positions and the transportation and warehousing sector gained nearly 5,000, much of the hiring consisted of part-time roles, which typically pay less and may explain the slowdown in wage growth.
Political Influence on Employment Trends
President Joe Biden attributed the ongoing job gains to his administration’s efforts, including extensive pandemic aid and investments in various sectors. Despite the good news, challenges persist, particularly regarding inflation and its impact on real wage growth. Some businesses, especially in the hospitality sector, continue to seek workers to recover from pandemic losses, while smaller companies outside the tech industry are still actively hiring.
