Komatsu has completely reengineered its HM400-5 articulated haul truck, unveiling the updated model, HM460-6, at ConExpo 2026.

This new model features a high-performance powertrain, a sophisticated traction control system, and an enhanced operator environment.

Designed for applications in quarrying, construction, large site development, mining, and infrastructure, the HM460-6 boasts a higher payload rating and better fuel efficiency than its predecessor. According to Komatsu, it aims to provide a lower cost per ton while ensuring consistent and reliable performance throughout the hauling cycle.

The HM460-6 has a payload capacity of 46.3 tons, an increase from the previous 44.2 tons. Its new mainframe, created from stronger and lighter steel, reduces the truck’s weight by more than 5,000 pounds, bringing the total operating weight to 165,126 pounds.

Engine and Transmission

Powered by Komatsu’s new 518-horsepower DBA127 Tier 4 Final diesel engine, this truck is designed to provide enhanced torque at lower speeds, which improves acceleration, hill climbing, and power delivery under load.

Thanks to its two-stage turbocharging system, the engine consumes 12% less fuel than the previous version by providing efficient boost across a wide range of operation. An electronically controlled bypass valve enhances durability and responsiveness.

Two working modes allow flexibility: “Power mode” for heavy workloads and uphill hauling, and “Economy mode” for light tasks on flat terrain. The truck also features auto idle shutdown and power-off functions for fuel savings, along with an Ecogauge for operational efficiency.

Traction Control System

The standard Komatsu Traction Control System works with inter-axle and cross-axle differential locks to continuously monitor wheel performance. This system automatically applies brake force to individual wheels as needed to maintain traction, reducing tire spin and prolonging tire life.

As Komatsu’s Director of Products and Service, Bruce Boebel, explains, “When the wheels start to spin, it’ll brake that side and shift it over to the other side to get you going and keep your momentum with the truck.”

Redesigned Cab

The HM460-6 also features a newly designed cab that prioritizes visibility, ergonomics, and operator comfort. Its four-pillar design increases the glass area by 16%, which reduces blind spots by 43%, thereby improving awareness during loading and dumping.

The cab includes an efficient air conditioning system, a deluxe air-suspension seat, and a user-friendly control layout. An 8-inch primary monitor and a 10-inch sub-monitor display essential information, including payload data and rearview feeds, making operation more intuitive.

Maintenance

To ease maintenance, the HM460-6 features a powered tilting hood, ground-level service points, and longer service intervals. Sampling ports simplify oil checks for routine maintenance.

Komatsu has equipped the truck with telematics data monitoring, granting fleet managers access to machine health and performance data.

Specifications for the Komatsu HM460-6 Haul Truck
