The Drive-By Truckers Confront Alcoholism in Their New Album
At successive Drive-By Truckers concerts, I’ve witnessed the band sharing a whiskey bottle during breaks between songs. Each sip prompted cheers from an equally spirited crowd, intertwining alcohol with the band’s vibrant rock ‘n’ roll ambiance. This narrative, however, is a perilous myth, as it exists in a gray area between truth and falsehood.
On their exceptional album, Welcome 2 Club XIII, co-founders Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley tackle this myth directly. While previous albums delved into their Alabama roots—covering themes like race, religion, and a rock lifestyle—they now confront alcohol and the implications of the partying culture they previously embraced.
Toward the end of 2018, during the sessions for their politically charged album The Unraveling, the Truckers crafted three of Hood’s new songs: “Welcome 2 Club XIII,” “Billy Ringo in the Dark,” and “Wilder Days,” which reflect on their turbulent 20s. Realizing these tracks wouldn’t fit with their recent politically themed works, the band chose to develop these alongside more new material, resulting in this year’s Welcome 2 Club XIII.
Hood specifically wanted “Wilder Days” to conclude the album, stating over the phone from Colorado, “The feeling evoked by ‘Wilder Days’ was precisely what I aimed for throughout the record.” The opening acoustic guitar sets a reflective tone as Hood reminisces about vibrant but reckless youth filled with unfulfilled ideals.
Balancing nostalgia with realizations, Hood conveys a mix of fondness and regret in his vocals. Beyond the euphoric highs of creativity, there’s an acknowledgment of the often-hidden dangers of substance abuse. While they survived the chaotic lifestyle, many around them did not, leading to contemplations of lost friends and missed chances.
In their lyrics, both artists reflect on their past while addressing the challenges of parenting. Cooley recounts conversations with his son about avoiding destructive behavior, ultimately leading to the powerful song “Every Single Storied Flameout.” The track confronts the allure of self-destructive choices while expressing the heart’s tendency to believe what it desires.
As they navigate memories of wild times and the sobering realities of their choices, Hood and Cooley emphasize the importance of understanding one’s past. The album reflects a journey of survival and acceptance, illustrated through the poignant narrative of their youthful escapades and the lessons learned along the way. Welcome 2 Club XIII serves as a tribute to those who didn’t make it and a reminder of the perils that come with a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.
