A record-breaking agreement valued at billions is set to see Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer XCMG supply over 200 of its 240-ton electric haul trucks to Australian mining leader Fortescue. This deal represents a significant step in the effort to decarbonize the mining sector.
XCMG has quickly established itself as a leader in quality electric equipment, having developed the “world’s first” advanced smart mining model at the Yimin Mine operated by China Huaneng. The company recently received the 2025 Decarbonizing Mining Award and ranks among the top four manufacturers of open-pit heavy equipment globally.
This week, XCMG and Fortescue commemorated their partnership during a signing ceremony in Beijing, initiating a strategic cooperation focused on green mining technologies. According to the agreement, XCMG will provide Fortescue with up to 200 of their massive 240-ton battery-electric haul trucks. This not only surpasses a previous agreement made last year but also marks the largest export of eco-friendly mining machinery from China to date.
Significant Implications

Fortescue perceives this deal not only as significant due to its scale but also as a means to foster international cooperation in the push for complete decarbonization.
“The world has previously thrived on open trade and collaboration – now it faces division,” said Dr. Andrew Forrest, Fortescue’s Executive Chairman and Founder. “We are demonstrating that industry can revive that multilateral spirit through practical partnerships that showcase the potential for increased profits alongside reduced emissions.”
He highlighted that “China is rapidly manufacturing green technologies,” and that their partnership allows Fortescue to leverage this capability.
The upcoming XCMG 240-ton electric haul trucks are designed as giants, capable of transporting payloads exceeding 500,000 pounds, with a total vehicle weight rating over 380 tonnes. Equipped with a powerful 1,900 kW (2,550 hp) electric drive system, these trucks can tackle steep grades up to 17% and reach speeds of 56 km/h (35 mph), making them among the most robust and capable electric vehicles available, significantly reducing emissions while maintaining high hauling performance.
With Fortescue already achieving substantial fuel savings, this landmark deal is expected to have a major impact on global diesel consumption.
