Raleigh Fire Department Prepares for Ice Storm
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — The Raleigh Fire Department is readying fire trucks in anticipation of the upcoming ice storm, and ABC11 was on-site to witness the initial use of a new tool.
New Snow Chains for Traction
Specialized snow chains are being installed on fire truck tires. These chains feature spikes designed to enhance traction during emergency responses in the storm.
Additional Equipment for Residents
The department has various other resources to assist residents during the imminent ice storm.
Emergency Preparedness
Raleigh Fire Chief Herbert Griffin stated, “We are also deploying a mobile rehab truck along with a military-grade rescue vehicle to aid the community. Since the storm’s impact is uncertain, we are preparing for any unexpected situations to support our community when needed.”
Police and Transportation Readiness
The police are making arrangements for officers to stay overnight at all stations, while the Transportation Department reported having around 40 snowplow trucks ready for action.
Prioritizing Key Routes
Officials indicate that the focus will be on ensuring main routes near fire stations and hospitals remain clear. Raleigh’s Transportation Director, Paul Callan, mentioned, “Brine has been applied at all 30 fire stations and on connecting streets to enhance emergency response times.”
Activation of Emergency Center and Precautions
Raleigh will activate its Emergency Center on Saturday evening. Additionally, Urban Forester Zach Manor has backup staff ready to assist with clearing any fallen trees. Residents are encouraged to park their vehicles away from trees to prevent any accidents from falling branches.
Safety First
Manor cautioned, “Even small branches can create challenges for navigation during these conditions.”
