Tragic Incident at Suncor’s Fort Hills Site
A worker has lost their life following an incident at Suncor’s Fort Hills facility near Fort McMurray, Alberta, as reported by the province’s Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration department.
Details of the Incident
According to the statement, the worker was operating heavy machinery on January 13 when the equipment sank into the muskeg, a type of wetland. Emergency crews from both the RCMP and Suncor responded to the situation. While Suncor acknowledged that the worker was near a water source, they confirmed that the individual has yet to be found.

Suncor announced that search and recovery operations are currently in progress. The company added that the cause of death is under investigation, but there are signs suggesting that it might be related to a medical issue. The deceased was identified as a contractor.
Previous Fatal Incidents
This incident marks a continuation of a concerning trend at Suncor’s Fort Hills site, where fatalities have occurred in the past. In 2019, a worker named Jonathan Murphy was killed after being struck by a vehicle, and the following year, two workers died in a collision involving a bulldozer and a pickup truck.
Ongoing Investigation
The Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration department stated that they will refrain from sharing further details while the Occupational Health and Safety department conducts its investigation.
Support for the Deceased’s Family
Suncor expressed its condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
