Stolen Equipment Ahead of Mexico vs. Japan Match
OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — This weekend, Oakland is set to host a highly anticipated soccer match between the national teams of Mexico and Japan. However, just days before the event at Oakland Coliseum, the Mexican national team’s training equipment was reported stolen.
Local fans and officials expressed disappointment over the theft but emphasized the match’s importance in uniting the community. Many believe this event will draw in thousands and foster a unique atmosphere in Oakland.
Social media is abuzz with images of Mexico’s national team, “El Tri,” as they arrive in Oakland, sparking excitement among local soccer enthusiasts.
Fan Ivan Castro shared his enthusiasm, mentioning, “I really like Raul Jimenez. He’s our top striker,” and added he hoped to see the team in practice on Tuesday in Alameda, although it turned out to be more challenging than he expected.
Many fans are looking forward to seeing the players in practice, while others are waiting at the players’ hotel for autographs, with names like Raul Jimenez and coach Aguirre topping their lists.
This Saturday’s match carries high expectations as fans recognize Japan’s growth in soccer in recent years. Councilmember Noel Gallo noted, “We’ve got a large Mexican/Latino community here. Soccer is an international sport, and there’s significant interest in tickets.”
Unfortunately, just before the match, police reported that thieves had broken into the team’s equipment truck parked near their downtown hotel, stealing various training items. Despite such setbacks, a representative from the Mexican team downplayed the situation, stating it was “a minor incident” and assured that the team remains focused on the upcoming game.
Gallo added that it’s essential to recognize the opportunity professional soccer brings to Oakland. The last time the Mexican national team played in the area was back in 2007, making this event even more special.
