Buzzing Anticipation for Caterpillar’s Pickup Truck
In the autumn of 2024, social media exploded with AI-created images of a Caterpillar pickup truck.
Caterpillar previously maintained that they had no plans to develop a work truck—until now.
The concept smart truck showcased at ConExpo 2026 is built on a Ford F-450 chassis and aims to serve as the ideal vehicle for foremen. This unique model was crafted to highlight Cat’s jobsite technologies and is not intended for actual production.
Archie Lyons, Caterpillar’s creative director, pointed out, “Through customer research, we identified a need for better management solutions, particularly for foremen managing multiple job sites.”
The exterior of the truck has been revamped with what Lyons calls “Cat DNA,” featuring a striking black and yellow digital paint scheme, Cat branding on the grill and tailgate, a lined bed with a headache rack, added lighting, rugged running boards, and Continental MPT 81 275/80R20 all-season tires designed for durability. Inside, Cat branding is also present on the black leather seats.
The smart truck comes equipped for jobsite demands with a Cat AI Assistant, VisionLink, and an autonomous drone mounted on the roof. “This is certainly a forward-looking concept,” Lyons remarks. “We’re receiving valuable feedback and encouraging individuals to consider how they can enhance their everyday Chevy, Ford, or Ram trucks with similar technologies to better manage their job sites and reclaim personal time at the end of the day.”
