Truck Driver Shortage in the U.S.
According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, trucks are responsible for transporting 72% of the goods in the United States. The failure to adequately staff these trucks with drivers threatens to disrupt the U.S. economy. Currently, there is a significant shortage of truck drivers.
Supporting Veterans in Trucking
To address this issue, Hiring Our Heroes, an initiative by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is launching the Drive for 500 campaign to assist U.S. military veterans in securing these truck driving positions.
Job Opportunities in Trucking
There are over 55,500 open positions in the American trucking industry, a sector vital for the everyday functioning of the nation. To tackle supply chain challenges, it is essential to boost the number of individuals transporting goods, which Drive for 500 aims to achieve by offering free training for veterans to obtain commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs).
Understanding CDL Requirements
A CDL is necessary for operating large vehicles or transporting hazardous materials for commercial purposes. Obtaining a CDL involves taking a written test and, in some cases, a road test. The investment in this training pays off: in 2021, the average salary for a truck driver in the U.S. exceeded $48,000, with some drivers earning upwards of $100,000.
Drive for 500 Scholarship Program
Drive for 500 will assist veterans by offering 500 full scholarships for CDL training, in partnership with TransForce Group, a company specializing in CDL training and job placement. Their Troops Into Transportation Master Driving Program features regional training centers nationwide.
Comprehensive Support for Veterans
The scholarships cover all necessary instruction, behind-the-wheel training, travel to training sites, lodging, training materials, and fees for physicals and tests required by the Department of Transportation. Veterans will only need to handle their meal costs and any incidental expenses.
Eligibility and Further Information
TransForce Group has connected over 500 employers seeking dedicated, skilled drivers for the 55,500 trucking positions available.
