Hope Zvara had a lightbulb moment in 2017 during a professional mixer in Wisconsin. While discussing yoga applications, a fellow attendee asked if there were any practices suitable for truck drivers in their cabs. This inquiry sparked an entrepreneurial idea in Zvara’s mind. “I could design something practical and useful for them,” she reflected.
Within a year, Zvara launched Mother Trucker Yoga. “I’m not a truck driver myself,” she clarifies. “My dad worked in tough jobs, and I saw him struggle without gratitude.” This background fueled her passion for supporting those in essential roles who often go unnoticed.
With her husband holding a commercial driver’s license, Zvara learned about the trucker lifestyle, which informs her yoga teachings. Unlike office workers who can stretch and move around, truckers often can’t get up, making every dollar count. This insight is why Mother Trucker Yoga emphasizes straightforward and practical techniques. She adapts yoga poses using items typically found in a truck or at truck stops, creating a discreet way for drivers to practice.
The platform includes a YouTube channel and an app offering both short and long yoga sessions focused on common issues, such as leg or lower back pain. Zvara’s teaching style reflects her casual attire, often including everyday wear, and her communication uses relatable language. Many instructional videos are concise, often under 90 seconds, perfect for truck drivers with busy schedules.
Health Benefits for Truck Drivers
A study from the National Institutes of Health revealed that many truckers feel out of shape, with nearly half diagnosed with high cholesterol. Alarmingly, truck drivers are at a greater risk for obesity and diabetes than the average U.S. worker. Additionally, they often face challenges managing their mental health as isolation and loneliness are common due to the nature of long-haul driving.
Encouraging mindfulness and meditation, Zvara creates audio sessions that emphasize mental well-being. “I really aim to get drivers to tune inward,” she says, encouraging change through self-awareness. This approach helps them manage anxiety, stress, and feelings of loneliness.
Cultivating a Yoga Mindset Among Truckers
Cheryl Vickers, who obtained her commercial driver’s license nearly ten years ago, learned the health impact of her lifestyle firsthand. Initially, she and her husband faced weight gain and health issues due to their sedentary routine. However, after discovering Mother Trucker Yoga, their lives transformed. They adopted healthier eating habits and engaged in more physical activities, resulting in significant weight loss and improved mental health.
Vickers highlights the importance of mindset in this journey. “It helps with anxiety, depression, and overall stress,” she notes, demonstrating the efficacy of simple movements in improving physical and emotional well-being.
The Impact of Yoga for Truck Drivers
Zvara’s mission is to make yoga accessible and appreciated. With a vision to assist one million drivers in revamping their health journeys, she has already reached over 200,000 individuals via her app, YouTube channel, and other platforms. Zvara aims to dismantle misconceptions surrounding trucking, mental health, and yoga, emphasizing that truck drivers are part of a demanding yet deserving industry that warrants recognition.
