Six months after introducing its most significant excavator redesign in two decades, Volvo has now revealed a comprehensive update of its articulated dump trucks (ADTs), which includes a new size for its product range.
The new lineup consists of seven next-generation ADT models, with payload capabilities ranging from 28 to 61 U.S. tons, set to replace the existing models.
On January 28, Volvo introduced the new 50-ton A50 model, which offers a 5-ton increase in payload compared to the 45-ton A45G FS and achieves an 8% boost in fuel efficiency.
Melker Jernberg, President and CEO of Volvo Construction Equipment, described this year as the company’s “biggest launch year ever,” stating, “This is our biggest and boldest articulated launch ever.”
Volvo plans to start taking orders in North America for the A35, A40, A45, and A50 models in Q1, while the remaining three models—the A25, A30, and A60—will be available throughout 2025.
The newly designed ADTs feature improved fuel efficiency compared to their predecessors, along with a redesigned, more comfortable cab, enhanced visibility, advanced safety features, and easier maintenance access. Volvo has constructed these trucks using low-carbon steel and has ensured they can adapt to future drivetrain technologies.
Enhanced Cab Design
The next-gen ADT cabs have increased floor space, lower noise levels, and come with new hanging pedals, steering wheels, and adjustable seats. A premium seat is equipped with heating, air conditioning, and automatically adjusts its air suspension based on the operator’s weight.
The hood is now designed with a lower slope, and the windows have been enlarged to improve visibility. Operators can also utilize the Volvo Co-Pilot touchscreen for viewing surroundings, which is equipped with standard entrance cameras and optional front and rear cameras.
Technology Integration
Operators will now access two display screens. The updated Volvo Co-Pilot allows for simpler control of camera settings, climate control, and machine status, with many functions now touchscreen-based rather than controlled by switches. Another screen serves as an instrument cluster located in front of the steering wheel.
The new models also feature several technological advancements, including Haul Assist for real-time payload data, a Connected Map service for job site visualization, performance indicators for production metrics, and ActiveCare Direct telematics.
Efficiency and Productivity Improvements
Volvo’s new electronic system and transmission contribute to enhanced fuel efficiency, while Terrain Memory technology helps optimize power and traction based on road conditions. Additional features include predictive gear selection, improved tipping clearance, and reinforced axles to manage increased loads effectively.
Maintenance Simplification
The latest ADTs are engineered for easier and safer maintenance, eliminating the need for daily or weekly greasing, with intervals now set at every 250 hours for greasing and every 1,000 hours for oil changes.
Other maintenance conveniences include a ladder that folds out from under the hood, a hood that raises or lowers with a button, illuminated engine compartments, and an automated fuel-filter priming system.
Specifications Overview
Volvo has released a specification chart for the four new articulated dump truck models intended for North America, with three more models expected to launch later this year.
