New Truck Driver Initiatives Announced
WASHINGTON – U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has launched a series of new programs and regulatory changes aimed at enhancing the lives of truck drivers across America.
As per a media release from USDOT, Duffy’s initiatives fulfill President Donald Trump’s commitment outlined in his Executive Order on “Enforcing Commonsense Rules of the Road for America’s Truck Drivers.”
“Truckers are essential to the American economy,” Duffy stated. “While the nation rests, truckers work tirelessly to keep stores supplied, families nourished, and businesses operational. This demanding work has been made unnecessarily difficult by federal regulations, but that changes today. With President Trump’s support, we are easing the burdens from Washington on your work and your livelihoods.”
Investment in Truck Parking
The package features a significant investment to expand truck parking, alongside efforts to eliminate broad mandates, modernize driver resources, reduce bureaucratic hurdles, and target unscrupulous operators.
Specifically, USDOT plans to allocate over $275 million in grants to enhance truck parking accessibility nationwide, a move aimed at boosting safety and improving truckers’ quality of life.
Highlighted Grants in Florida
This includes a $180 million allocation for Florida, which will create 917 new truck parking spots along the I-4 corridor in Volusia, Seminole, and Osceola Counties. “The trucking industry is crucial to our supply chain, and sufficient truck parking is essential for the safety and quality of life for Florida residents,” commented Jared W. Perdue, Florida Department of Transportation Secretary.
Support from Industry Leaders
Chris Spear, president and CEO of the American Trucking Associations (ATA), expressed gratitude towards the Trump Administration and Secretary Duffy for their ongoing attention to trucking industry concerns. “A robust trucking industry is vital for America’s economic stability and prosperity, and measures that reduce regulatory constraints are critical for achieving that,” he said.
Responses from Trucking Organizations
Todd Spencer, president and CEO of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), also welcomed the new actions, stating they improve truckers’ daily lives and enhance safety for all road users. He expressed appreciation for Duffy listening to the needs of drivers who are foundational to the economy.
Key Actions and Future Plans
Duffy announced a national audit focusing on states issuing non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses, aimed at ensuring regulatory compliance and addressing potential exploitation. “This audit is crucial for the safety of families on the roads and maintaining a trustworthy CDL system,” Duffy noted. USDOT has instructed FMCSA to review the issuing processes for these licenses comprehensively.
