Truckers Lean Towards Trump Ahead of Presidential Election
As the presidential election approaches in five days, former President Trump is gaining support from many big-rig truckers. These truckers harbor concerns about how a potential Harris administration might impact the vital auto industry, according to a trucking executive.
Reasons for Support
Mike Kucharski, co-owner and vice president of JKC Trucking—Chicago’s largest specialty contract carrier—identified five factors influencing truckers’ preference for Trump: rising costs, added regulatory burdens, infrastructure, the driving range of electric trucks, and reduced cargo capacity due to battery limitations.
Policy-Driven Preferences
“I don’t vote exclusively along party lines; I support candidates based on their policies,” Kucharski stated in an exclusive conversation. “Currently, numerous small business owners within the trucking sector are deeply worried about how Kamala Harris would influence our industry if she assumes office.”
Concerns Over Costs and Regulations
Kucharski noted that costs are the main concern for truckers. “Many are struggling under soaring diesel prices, causing them to drive fewer miles while paying more for fuel. Additionally, the burden of increased regulations is weighing heavily on truckers,” he explained.
Industry Readiness for Electric Trucks
While truckers are generally open to electric vehicles, Kucharski emphasized that the industry is unprepared for mandates like those advocated by the Biden-Harris administration. Although Harris’ campaign declared she opposes electric vehicle mandates, the EPA has proposed stringent rules requiring that a substantial percentage of new vehicle sales be electric by 2032.
Support for an Energy-Independent Future
Many truckers favor Trump because he advocates for an energy-independent future. “Trump acknowledges the significance of truckers, having expressed gratitude during COVID for their essential roles,” Kucharski said. He believes Trump could relax some regulations that are currently burdensome for the trucking industry.
Broader Industry Perspectives
Jeremy Kirkpatrick from the American Trucking Associations stated that they aim to collaborate with whichever candidate wins, advocating for policies that benefit the trucking sector. Meanwhile, Brian Pannebecker, founder of Auto Workers for Trump 2024, predicts significant support for Trump from members of the United Auto Workers union, citing long-standing frustrations with job losses to foreign markets.
