One of the enjoyable aspects of traveling to various countries is that you gain insights not only into different cultures but also learn about your own. Americans venturing abroad often discover that they are appreciated worldwide for their openness, friendliness, and ability to convey hope and optimism.

Conversely, it’s quite easy for people in other countries to identify Americans, often due to their tendency to speak loudly, regardless of the setting. Their distinctive body language is also noticeable, as they commonly lean against objects when standing for a long time.

A Reddit user asked for input on “obvious” signs that someone is American in the AskReddit subforum, garnering more than 35,000 responses. Many commenters pointed out that Americans are known for their cheerful demeanor and eagerness to engage in small talk, which is something many find appealing.

According to Redditors, here are 15 “obvious” signs that someone is American:

1. Unique Confidence

One Italian remarked that Americans walk confidently, even if they’re heading in the wrong direction. This attitude stems from being taught to walk quickly to project a sense of purpose.

2. Friendly Disposition

A Paris cashier noted that Americans were easy to recognize due to their friendly nature and propensity to leave tips. There are worse traits than being friendly and generous!

3. Time Equals Distance

When asked about distances, Americans often respond with the time it takes to reach a destination rather than the actual distance in miles, which can frustrate some when they prefer concrete figures.

4. Smiles at Strangers

In the Midwest, Americans often greet passing strangers with smiles, a practice that bewildered a European boyfriend when he witnessed the friendly interactions that seemed oddly foreign to him.

5. Preference for Personal Space

Americans generally appreciate at least an arm’s length of personal space. They’re accustomed to larger physical spaces, which may contribute to their louder voices and social behavior. Body language expert Joe Navarro states that American social zones are typically four to 12 feet apart for acquaintances, whereas they stand closer to family and friends.

6. Leaning Habits

According to former CIA chief of disguise Jonna Mendez, Americans tend to lean against things while standing still, which is often perceived by Europeans as a sign of being slouchy or sloppy.
