ALEXANDRIA, Va. — TCA Honors Terry Walde as Highway Angel
The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has recognized Terry Walde as a TCA Highway Angel for his quick response in assisting a cyclist who was struck by a semi-truck in a hit-and-run incident.
Background of the Honoree
Terry Walde, a resident of Miami, Manitoba, Canada, is a professional driver for Searcy Trucking Ltd. based in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Incident Overview
On May 27, around 12:45 p.m., while traveling eastbound on Highway 1 between Ernfold and Chaplin, Saskatchewan, Walde came across debris on the highway and slowed down. Shortly thereafter, he encountered a serious situation—a cyclist attempting to cross Canada had been hit by a semi-truck that did not stop.
Acting Quickly to Help
“I saw the bicycle and the man lying next to it,” Walde recounted. “Another truck driver stopped to call 911 while I checked on the cyclist to ensure he was still alive.”
Assessing the Cyclist’s Injuries
The cyclist had endured severe injuries, including a broken leg, ribs, and collarbone, and was found struggling to breathe on the roadside. Walde noted, “You could see the truck that fled drove into the grass, then back onto the road, with tire tracks indicating it went right over him.”
Ensuring Safety and Communication
Walde relayed the cyclist’s condition to emergency services and took it upon himself to manage traffic at the accident site for several hours as vehicles continued to speed by. Searcy Trucking provided dashcam footage that aided the investigation. RCMP Constable Ryan Oram later confirmed that the responsible driver was located and charged.
Walde’s Perspective on Helping Others
When asked about his motivation to assist the injured cyclist, Walde stated plainly, “I’m old school — it’s how I was taught. We help each other.”
