An illegal immigrant truck driver, Harjinder Singh, 28, who is implicated in a devastating accident that resulted in three fatalities on a Florida highway, has been returned to Florida after escaping to California. This development came shortly after the Trump administration revealed it would suspend all work visas for commercial drivers.
Singh was escorted onto a plane in California on Thursday and returned to Florida, as confirmed by the Florida Department of Highway Safety. He was apprehended by US Marshals in California, one of the two states where he holds a commercial driver’s license.
According to Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, Singh fled back to California after the August 12 crash. “We’re here today because of tragedy,” Collins stated. “Three lives lost. Three Floridians’ lives ended early.”
Following the transfer of Singh, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced an immediate suspension of all commercial truck driver work visas, citing increased risks to American lives and threats to the livelihoods of domestic truckers as key concerns.
Recent Developments on the Case of Harjinder Singh
Singh is facing three counts of vehicular homicide for allegedly making an illegal U-turn with his truck across a busy highway. Video evidence shows Singh maneuvering his truck through an “Official Use Only” access point, which obstructed multiple traffic lanes, leaving a black minivan with no escape route, resulting in a high-speed collision.
Singh, who reportedly entered the US illegally in 2018, has obtained commercial driver’s licenses in both California and Washington. However, a recent examination indicated severe limitations in his English proficiency and ability to read road signs, raising questions about his qualifications.
