Truck Driver Job Demand Soars
Recent findings from hiring platform Indeed reveal that demand for truck driver positions has significantly increased this year.
Surge in Truck Driver Positions
There has been an impressive 83% rise in job opportunities for truck drivers during the first half of the year.
Shortage of Truck Drivers in Ireland and the EU
Indeed highlighted that the shortage of truck drivers in Ireland and the EU has gained attention, particularly due to backlogs of up to 10 weeks for those attempting to schedule their HGV driving exams.
Growing Demand and Shortfall
The combination of increasing demands for online orders and international shipping has created an estimated shortfall of 3,000-4,000 new drivers needed to satisfy market needs.
Hospitality Sector Booms
Research indicates that various hospitality jobs have also experienced significant demand growth, with many of the top 20 job titles coming from this sector.
Specific Job Increases
Particularly, line cooks have seen a 66% increase in demand, while other roles such as food and beverage assistants (60%), commis (52%), chefs (47%), and bartenders (46%) have also recorded substantial gains in job postings during the first half of the year.
Post-Pandemic Job Trends
Indeed reported that overall job postings in Ireland are currently 20% higher than pre-pandemic levels, despite a decline from the COVID peaks. However, Dublin’s job postings remain 11% below pre-pandemic figures, attributed to its vulnerability to slowdowns in professional fields.
Expert Insights
According to Jack Kennedy, Senior Economist at Indeed, the persistent shortages across Europe explain why truck driving positions are in high demand. He notes that the backlog of HGV tests, alongside rising needs for online shopping and international shipping, could lead to continued shortages. The hospitality industry is also seeing a notable uptick in demand, especially with the summer season approaching.
