Tragic Interstate 20 Crash Claims Sixth Life
A devastating accident on Interstate 20 over the weekend has resulted in a sixth fatality, as confirmed by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The incident took place on Saturday afternoon near Terrell, Texas, involving a series of collisions between three 18-wheelers and four other vehicles.
According to reports from Fox 4, the truck driver, 39-year-old Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, causing him to crash into several vehicles, including two other semi-trucks.
The most recent victim, who was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, has succumbed to their injuries. Among those who lost their lives were four passengers in a Ford F-150, with one individual from that vehicle later passing away in the hospital. Additionally, a passenger in a Jeep also died.
DPS officials verified that all victims were inhabitants of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Gonzalez-Companioni now faces six counts of manslaughter.
Investigators are still gathering details about the tragic event, particularly concerning whether the driver violated federally mandated rest periods designed to prevent fatigue-related accidents. In Texas, truck drivers must comply with stringent Hours of Service regulations, which dictate driving limits and required breaks.
Moreover, toxicology test results are still awaited, which could have serious ramifications for the truck driver. CBS also reported on two nurses at a nearby family reunion who offered medical assistance to the injured before emergency responders arrived at the chaotic scene. As of now, the trucking company connected to Gonzalez-Companioni has not commented on the incident or the driver’s background, and the identities of all victims have yet to be publicly disclosed.
