New Insurance Collaboration Introduced
Daimler Truck Financial Services has forged a partnership with Geico to provide fleets and owner-operators a new usage-based insurance (UBI) model. This initiative aims to leverage carrier data to potentially transform premium underwriting.
Connected Insurance Program
Recently, Daimler Financial unveiled its “Connected Insurance” program. This data-centric insurance initiative allows owners of modern Freightliner and Western Star trucks to voluntarily share real-time data via Detroit Connect telematics, which could lead to premium reductions of up to 10%, depending on driving performance. Notably, this does not require additional on-board diagnostics or dashcam installations.
Accessibility for Small Fleets
The program is available to both small fleets and owner-operators through Daimler Financial’s subsidiary insurance agency, alongside existing offerings for physical damage and liability coverage. In collaboration with Geico’s DriveEasy Pro, the program marks a significant shift towards usage-based policies, a concept that has evolved significantly since Overdrive last assessed the UBI environment three years ago.
Telematics Data Management
Jeff Davis, a compliance consultant, highlighted that insurers are increasingly considering telematics data alongside traditional metrics like Motor Vehicle Records and geographical location for their underwriting processes. He emphasized the critical role that small fleets can play in managing this data effectively to realize potential savings.
Proactive Changes and Analysis
Engaging with telematics data enables fleet owners to identify driving behaviors and improve safety measures. For example, Davis illustrated how a larger fleet analyzed telematics data post-accident, revealing a history of risky behaviors that preceded the incident, which had gone previously unaddressed. Continuous analysis allows for ongoing engagement with drivers to mitigate risks.
Competitive Dynamics in Telematics
Mike Jordan of NASTC Insurance Services remarked on how sharing telematics data can lead to better insurance rates. By illustrating positive driving behaviors, even fleets recovering from significant accidents can negotiate manageable premiums. He shared a case where careful review of data led to a quote that kept a small fleet operational despite previous shock losses.
The Future of Usage-Based Insurance
Wes Oberman of Oberman Logistics noted the advantages he’s observed from engaging with telematics data, fostering a competitive spirit among his leased owner-operators. He expressed optimism about the growing interest in fully usage-based models for insurance. Both Davis and Jordan encouraged fleets to analyze their telematics data closely to identify opportunities for safety improvements and better insurance rates moving forward.
