The Importance of Daily Sunscreen Use
While most of us remember to apply sunscreen during beach days, many neglect to incorporate it into their daily skincare routines.
Our faces are continuously exposed to UV rays throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions.
Surprisingly, only enthusiasts in beauty circles seem to prioritize preventing fine lines and wrinkles consistently.
A striking image of a truck driver serves as a reminder of the daily impact of sunlight on our skin’s health.
Shared in the New England Journal of Medicine, the photo of the 69-year-old reveals significant aging on one side of his face compared to the other.
An analysis showed that the left side exhibited characteristics of ‘Favre-Racouchot syndrome,’ a form of photodamage called dermatoheliosis, attributed to 28 years of UVA exposure through his truck window.
Consequences of UVA Exposure
The left side’s skin has thickened due to a condition known as unilateral dermatoheliosis. UVA rays can penetrate glass and cloud cover, causing long-term skin damage by degrading elastic fibers, resulting in deep wrinkles.
Since UVA rays constitute 95% of the UV radiation that reaches the Earth’s surface, avoiding them is nearly impossible, according to Skincancer.org. These rays not only age the skin but also increase the risk of skin cancer by damaging DNA and causing direct toxicity.
It is essential to apply sunscreen daily, even on overcast days.
The truck driver has been advised to start using topical retinoids and sunscreen, as well as to undergo regular skin cancer screenings.
How often do you wear sunscreen?
IDK but I’m going to start wearing it every day now
