MERCEDES-Benz SA’s Commitment
Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) has long been dedicated to combating HIV/AIDS and enhancing employee wellness, not only for its own staff but also for communities connected to its operations. In partnership with the Corridor Empowerment Project, the company focuses on fostering healthier truck drivers and safer road conditions by supporting fleet owners in health and wellness education initiatives.
Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme
The Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme expands upon MBSA’s workplace wellness strategy. This initiative aims to help fleet owners adopt a comprehensive approach to employee health and wellness, guided by a successful model.
Importance of Healthy Truck Drivers
“South Africa’s trucking sector is vital to the economy, generating prosperity for many. Supporting healthy and skilled truck drivers is a key priority that we, as a responsible corporate leader, choose to fully endorse,” states Kobus van Zyl, Executive Director of Daimler Trucks and Buses Southern Africa.
Collaboration for Sustainability
“Collaboration is essential for MBSA as we aim to ensure a sustainable transport industry in South Africa, with employee wellbeing playing a crucial role,” van Zyl adds.
Ongoing Support for Trucking Wellness Initiative
Through its corporate social responsibility program, MBSA has actively supported the Trucking Wellness project since its launch in 2009. This initiative, under the National Bargaining Council of the Road Freight and Logistics Industry, provides education and basic healthcare services to truck drivers along major freight routes in southern Africa, including HIV/AIDS awareness and treatment.
Kelrn Vervoer’s Commitment
Kelrn Vervoer, a logistics provider with a nationwide presence, recently launched its Workplace Wellness Programme on May 31. This program will benefit its employees and receive continuous support from MBSA and the Corridor Empowerment Project, highlighting a significant commitment to employee health and wellness.
Positive Impact on Road Safety
Kenne de Kock, CEO of Kelrn Vervoer, notes, “We recognize the importance of healthy drivers and staff. We care about our personnel’s health and are proud to be part of the Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme with MBSA, which demonstrates MBSA’s genuine concern for the wellbeing of its customers and stakeholders, particularly long-distance truck drivers. This also plays a role in road safety.”
Expanded Wellness Programmes
To date, MBSA has implemented five Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programmes at Aspen Logistics, United Bulk, Bakers Transport, City Couriers, and Kelrn Vervoer. These initiatives offer fleet owners regular health updates, biannual consultations, training workshops, and assistance in developing wellness and HIV workplace policies. This program allows fleet owners to create tailored strategies to reduce the risks associated with disease and HIV/AIDS, ultimately safeguarding their businesses.
