The food truck sector is experiencing significant growth, with an expected annual increase of 10.3% from 2019 to 2024 in the US. These mobile eateries provide distinct food choices at affordable prices, offering entrepreneurs the flexibility to adapt to customer locations and maintain lower operational costs compared to traditional restaurants.

Let’s delve into the essential aspects of food truck expenses.

Overview of Food Truck Expenses

When launching a food truck business, you have three primary avenues to explore:

Brand New Food Trucks

A brand-new food truck typically costs between $75,000 and $200,000, influenced by your location and selected features. Although this option requires the most substantial initial investment and several months for preparation, it ensures that you have dependable equipment with minimal maintenance requirements. Custom options, such as truck branding and advanced kitchen tools, can increase the price significantly, but you will have a fully tailored setup from the start.

Pre-Owned Food Trucks

Choosing a used food truck can lower your initial financial commitment to between $50,000 and $100,000. Another feasible option is to buy a used truck chassis and install a new kitchen setup, which can cost anywhere from $85,000 to $115,000 total. While these options might require some engine repairs, they can enable you to start catering to customers more quickly.

Leasing a Food Truck

Leasing presents a viable route to initiate your food truck venture with reduced upfront costs. A six-month lease generally requires monthly payments of $2,000 to $3,000, although shorter agreements may incur higher costs. This approach allows you to test your business model before committing to a larger investment.

Startup Expenses for Food Trucks

Starting a food truck involves expenses comparable to other food business ventures. In addition to the truck cost, consider the following essential expenses:

Licenses and Permits

Operating within the food industry necessitates obtaining the appropriate licenses and permits. According to the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation, these expenses can vary from slightly under $1,000 to several thousand dollars based on your city. For instance, a food truck operator may pay $590 in Minneapolis, $2,439 in Los Angeles, and $17,066 in Boston.

Kitchen Supplies

Basic kitchen supplies generally include knives, cutting boards, pots, food processors, and storage containers. If you’re acquiring a used food truck, you may need to upgrade or replace equipment like ovens and food prep surfaces to effectively serve customers, with costs ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 depending on your requirements and the truck’s condition.

Generator

Generators are essential for powering your food truck’s operations, typically costing between $500 and $3,000, depending on size and power output.

Initial Stock

Your initial stock comprises all ingredients as well as serving items such as plates and utensils. While prices may differ according to your menu, allocate a few thousand dollars to begin.

Parking and Storage

Most cities impose specific regulations regarding food truck parking. Budget for costs like parking permits and monthly storage fees, which can range from $30 to $1,500, depending on your location and facilities.

Marketing

A typical budget for food businesses allocates 3% to 6% of their annual revenue to marketing. If starting without revenue forecasts, consider budgeting around $1,500 each month to grow your customer base.
