Promoting Health Among Truck Drivers
Maintaining fitness and health during long hours on the road can be challenging for truck drivers. Spending considerable time away from home, often for months, exacerbates the issue. David Copeland, a truck driver, recognized the unhealthy habits prevalent in the industry.
“When you observe truckers at any truck stop, the first noticeable issue is obesity,” he noted. Determined to initiate change, Copeland felt compelled to address the health challenges truckers face.
In response, he developed a versatile fitness bench designed for use in trucks or at truck stops. “Weighing only 25 pounds, it is collapsible and easy to store. Drivers can utilize it during their breaks, especially when they’re parked for over 30 minutes to an hour,” he explained.
Copeland aims to raise awareness among truck drivers about the significance of self-care on the road. “The primary goal is to inform enough truckers so they can continue to share this knowledge,” he emphasized.
The annual ‘Truckers Jamboree’ in Joplin provided Copeland with an excellent platform to demonstrate his fitness equipment and educate fellow drivers. This event honors the hard work and contributions of truck drivers.
“Truck drivers are hardworking individuals, and while it is an honorable profession, it comes with its challenges,” stated Joel Hamilton, manager of Joplin 44 Petro. The Jamboree allows drivers to take a break from their routines and discover new industry trends.
As an exhibitor, Copeland seeks to inspire truck drivers to stay active for their health. “I refuse to succumb to obesity, high blood pressure, and stress while on the job,” he declared. So far, he has sold over 300 fitness benches and hopes to see them in truck stops nationwide.
