Health Issues Among Indian Truck Drivers: A Study
The trucking sector is vital for India’s economic development, yet the demanding nature of truck driving adversely affects the physical and mental health of the drivers. According to a survey by Kantar IMRB in collaboration with Castrol India, over 50% of truck drivers in India are experiencing health-related issues related to their profession.
Survey Insights
This month-long research included over 1,000 truck drivers to explore the health challenges they face. Despite being prone to high rates of occupational injuries and fatalities, 63% of drivers surveyed do not prioritize their health among their top three life concerns.
Work Environment and Its Effects
Factors such as long working hours, extended time away from family, and difficult driving conditions have been identified as detrimental to their well-being. Approximately half of the drivers undertake trips exceeding 12 hours, and 46% drive continuously for more than six hours without taking breaks.
Ergonomic Risks
The nature of truck driving imposes ergonomic risks, including awkward postures, repetitive twisting of the back and neck, and sleeping in cramped spaces, contributing to chronic pain in the back, neck, and joints.
Neglected Health and Cultural Factors
This disregard for health is aggravated by unfavorable conditions in the trucking industry, such as poor road infrastructure, badly maintained vehicles, lack of hygienic food options and rest areas, inadequate wages, unpredictable schedules, and prolonged absences from home. Consequently, many truck drivers neglect their health while striving for a better livelihood.
Innovative Solutions: Truck Asanas
To address these health issues, Castrol partnered with experts from The Yoga Institute in Mumbai to develop simple health tips tailored for truck drivers. They have created a series of yoga asanas known as ‘Truck Asanas,’ which are designed to be practiced even while on the go.
Commitment to Health Improvement
Dr. Hansaji Yogendra, Director of The Yoga Institute, noted, “We’ve designed special truck asanas keeping drivers’ health in mind. Physical fitness is crucial for their efficiency, and we believe these asanas will enhance their overall well-being.” Over the next six months, Castrol plans to promote these yoga practices among truck drivers nationwide, encouraging a focus on health and wellness.
