Engen Launches Driver Wellness Campaign for Transport Month
In celebration of Transport Month this October, Engen is reinitiating its Driver Wellness Campaign, providing free voluntary health screenings for truck drivers throughout South Africa. This effort reflects Engen’s ongoing dedication to the health and safety of the nation’s “highway heroes.”
Starting on 20 October, the 2025 campaign aims to reach drivers at 29 Engen Truck Stops and select Engen 1-Stops across the country, maintaining the extensive reach achieved last year.
Engen is once again collaborating with Trucking Wellness, a program from the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI), to offer professional on-site health screenings and wellness assistance to drivers.
“Truck drivers are the unsung heroes of our highways,” notes Adnaan Emeran, Engen’s Commercial Marketing and Business Development Manager. “Their long hours make initiatives like this crucial—not only for their health but also for the safety of our roads. With 90% of goods in South Africa transported by road, Engen is proud to contribute to driving both the economy and our drivers forward.”
During last year’s Transport Month, over 1,600 health screenings were performed at Engen locations across eight provinces, an increase of more than 400 from the previous year. This year, truckers will again benefit from a variety of health checks, including assessments for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, malaria, TB, STIs, HIV/AIDS, and BMI. Each participating driver will receive a free tog bag as a gesture of gratitude from Engen.
Tertius Wessels, Managing Director of Trucking Wellness, explains that the initiative is more than just basic check-ups: “Drivers often spend extended periods away from home and face distinct health risks. By bringing wellness services to them, we are advocating for early detection and healthy lifestyles to ultimately enhance road safety in South Africa.”
The support extends beyond Transport Month, with drivers able to access care at six permanent Trucking Wellness clinics at Engen Truck Stops located in Beaufort West, Musina, Port Elizabeth (Gone South), East London (Kempston), Harrismith, and Kokstad. “Engen’s partnership with the transport sector spans decades,” adds Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI Manager, emphasizing the company’s commitment to supporting those who keep the nation supplied and connected.
