National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP)

The National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) aims to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes in adults by promoting healthy eating, physical activity, and effective stress management. In collaboration with the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), UnidosUS is dedicated to informing those most vulnerable—especially Latinos, who have a heightened risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes—about this evidence-based lifestyle change initiative.

Health Challenges for Professional Drivers

Professional drivers constitute a skilled workforce whose health is significantly influenced by their work conditions. Long hours of driving and extended periods of sitting increase their susceptibility to obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Given their demanding schedules, it is challenging to provide them with necessary health information, particularly through in-person sessions that cover topics like healthy eating, increased physical activity, and stress management.

HTAA’s Initiative for Drivers

The Healthy Trucking Association of America (HTAA), in partnership with AADE, is actively addressing diabetes among drivers. They promote a digital version of the National DPP (OMADA®) to eligible drivers and utilize radio broadcasts to raise awareness about prediabetes. Kaptain Jack, a radio host at InTheCabRadio.com, along with Bill Gordon, HTAA President, share vital health information and encourage at-risk drivers totake part in the transformative journey offered by OMADA®.

Public Service Announcements and Success Stories

HTAA has aired public service announcements on Renegade Radio and In the Cab Radio, focusing on health and wellness. Kaptain Jack, who has registered for OMADA® himself, openly discusses his experiences with prediabetes in his broadcasts and social media posts. “I’m happier, healthier, with more energy… believe me, you’re not going to be sorry,” he stated in a video about his OMADA® journey on September 24.

Collaboration with Transport Fleets

HTAA collaborates with various fleets, including Russell Transport, Inc., a prominent Hispanic-owned transportation company based in El Paso, Texas. This partnership enhances the distribution of OMADA® information. Russell Transport, recognized as one of the top 100 Hispanic American Owned Businesses, emphasizes the health and safety of its drivers. During orientation, new hires are guided to enroll in OMADA®, with promotional materials prominently displayed for visibility.

Challenges in Driver Engagement

Given that drivers are compensated per mile, long hours can discourage them from seeking health screenings or information. Huerta, who manages the new hire process, highlighted that many fleets prioritize financial incentives over health programs like OMADA®. Such initiatives can bolster productivity, reduce absenteeism, and lower turnover rates in the industry.

Family-Centric Orientation and Cultural Relevance

Huerta also emphasizes the importance of culturally relevant training for drivers. Out of the 123 drivers at Russell Transport, 72 are bilingual, with many being first-generation Latino immigrants. Orientations are primarily conducted in Spanish, with resources available in both languages. Family members are welcome at orientation sessions, fostering a supportive environment that encourages healthy lifestyle discussions and ensures that educational messages about nutrition, exercise, and stress management reach everyone in a driver’s household.

While the digital National DPP provides convenience, Huerta hopes drivers will eventually have access to in-person sessions. “It’s essential to communicate to them—this program is for you,” she emphasized.
