Perry Carter: A Rising Star in Trucking
Hailing from Marion, North Carolina, Perry Carter is establishing a notable presence both on the road and within the trucking sector. He has been recognized as one of the Truckload Carriers Association’s 2025 Professional Drivers of the Year.
Transitioning from Military to Trucking
After serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1978 to 1984, Carter began his career in a furniture box factory. However, he soon found that factory life wasn’t suited for him.
“I got tired of looking at four walls all the time,” Carter remarked.
A Family Legacy
Carter decided to honor a family tradition by pursuing trucking.
“My dad was a truck driver, and he encouraged me to give it a try,” Carter shared.
Training and Teaming with Dad
He started by attending trucking school at Isothermal Community College, which had ties to Coretta Trucking in New Jersey.
“There was a satellite terminal right across from my dad’s workplace at Coretta Trucking,” he noted.
After completing his training, he drove alongside his father for about eight months, gaining valuable experience together.
Finding the Right Fit
“You sometimes need to gain experience before moving to the next opportunity,” Carter said, explaining his journey to finding the ideal trucking company, which turned out to be Cargo Transporters.
Now, after 24 years, he still drives for Cargo Transporters and is committed to bettering the trucking industry.
“I’m out for a week but home every weekend,” he expressed. “I rarely miss weekends, which is a rarity for many companies.”
Recognitions and Community Involvement
Carter has received several accolades, including the 2025 Professional Driver of the Year by TCA and the 2025 DMC Insurance Driver of the Year, making him the only Cargo Transport driver to win both awards.
“Perry exemplifies what it means to be a professional driver and a community advocate,” commented Matthew Sheffield from Cargo Transporters.
Personal Life and Commitment to Veterans
Beyond his professional achievements, Carter is committed to supporting fellow veterans through various initiatives. He has rearranged his work schedule to care for his wife, Carolyn, and his disabled brother.
Through his advocacy and compassionate actions, Perry Carter continues to inspire those around him, highlighting the values of service and dedication.
