Engen’s Driver Wellness Programme: A Decade of Commitment

For the past ten years, commercial truck drivers across the nation have engaged in Engen’s Driver Wellness programme.

Celebrating Transport Month with Trucking Wellness

In collaboration with Trucking Wellness, an initiative of the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI), Engen celebrated Transport Month this October. Trucking Wellness clinics visited Engen service stations throughout South Africa, offering truck drivers free voluntary health screenings and wellness support, enabling them to prioritize their health amidst their demanding jobs and contributing to a safer and more efficient transport sector.

Successful Screenings Across the Country

During Transport Month, 1,600 health screenings occurred at 29 Engen service stations across eight provinces, reflecting an increase of over 400 tests compared to 2023.

Qualified Health Checks for Drivers

Drivers participated in health assessments conducted by certified nurses and counselors from the Trucking Wellness team. Screenings included checks for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, malaria, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, and Body Mass Index (BMI). Each driver also received a complimentary toiletry bag from Engen as a token of gratitude.

Emphasizing Safety and Health

Sim Manqina, Engen’s Transformation and Stakeholder Engagement Manager, stated the programme’s commitment to enhancing driver health and safety. Many drivers expressed their appreciation and adjusted their schedules to benefit from these critical health checks.

Comprehensive Support for Drivers

Trucking Wellness also extended support for managing primary healthcare issues identified during screenings. This year, key stakeholders in the transport industry, including Santam, MAN, and Guud Drivers, collaborated with Engen to foster health awareness among truck drivers.

Addressing Vision and Health Needs

The Guud Drivers’ Mobile Assessment Centre visited five sites, providing free health checks, Professional Driving Permit documentation, and eye assessments, offering complimentary spectacles where necessary. Notably, 70 out of 102 drivers tested required glasses, demonstrating the urgent need for improved access to vision care.

Ongoing Commitment to Truck Drivers’ Health

Engen remains dedicated to supporting the health of truck drivers. Adnaan Emeran, Engen’s Commercial Marketing and Business Development Manager, highlighted the program’s importance in making a real impact on fleet owners and drivers alike. To further facilitate drivers’ healthcare needs, the NBCRFLI has established six permanent Trucking Wellness clinics at strategic Engen truck stops nationwide.
