Diabetes Rates on the Rise
In the last ten years, diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes, has seen a concerning increase. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 15% of U.S. adults are affected by diabetes, with nearly 25% unaware of their condition. Moreover, another 11% of adults meet the criteria for prediabetes.
Truck Drivers at Greater Risk
Alarmingly, truck drivers have a risk of developing diabetes that is nearly double that of those in other jobs.
American Diabetes Month
November marks American Diabetes Month, serving as an important reminder to be aware of your health metrics and take steps to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.
Essential Health Metrics
Being aware of your health numbers is a key strategy for catching issues early. The American Diabetes Association now recommends that healthy adults begin screening for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes starting at age 35, and repeat screenings every three years. This usually involves a simple blood test performed via a finger prick, or more extensive bloodwork if necessary. Ongoing screenings are advised for those with risk factors, including high blood pressure and obesity.
Understanding Blood Sugar Levels
A normal fasting glucose level falls between 70-99 mg/dL, while levels should be under 140 mg/dL two hours after eating. An A1c test, which measures average blood sugar over two to three months, should ideally be below 5.7%. Elevated blood sugar levels can be concerning, yet they provide crucial insights into managing your long-term health.
Impact of Lifestyle Choices
Multiple factors, including dietary choices, physical activity, sleep, and stress, influence blood sugar levels. Tracking food and beverage intake using available apps can enhance awareness and assist in setting nutrition goals. For instance, opting for smaller, more frequent meals, reducing carbohydrate-heavy foods, and increasing fiber intake can make a notable difference.
