The Heartfelt Journey of Truck Driver Ron Szewczyk
Don’t inquire about the number of dogs truck driver Ron Szewczyk has; it’s not a secret, just a figure that changes frequently. As a “service human” at Ronco’s Rescue Ranch, he dedicates himself to finding homes for dogs in need, coordinating medical assistance, and transporting loads of dog food to underfunded shelters.
Szewczyk, owner of Ronco Trucking of TN Inc., believes that the bond is mutual, as the dogs played a significant role in his own emotional recovery. After surviving a severe accident in 2000, which left him with lingering trauma, a friend suggested he get a dog. Initially, he resisted the idea due to concerns about the upkeep involved.
However, he eventually embraced the thought of adopting and faced challenges due to his lifestyle as an over-the-road driver. Once he adopted his first dog, it marked the beginning of a growing family, as “one became two, and two became three.” His canine companions have supported him through various trials, including another accident and a home fire.
Szewczyk also reaches out to people facing difficult situations, offering side support. “If someone is going through a fatality accident and wants to talk, I’m here,” he said. He actively maintains several Facebook pages to connect with others, assisting those interested in adopting a dog into a loving home.
Growing up in Chicago as the grandson of Polish immigrants, Szewczyk learned the value of hard work from his family. He recalls his father’s tireless work ethic and fond memories of family trips to suburban nature spots. These experiences instilled in him an appreciation for exploration and the importance of community relationships.
Before becoming a truck driver, Szewczyk spent 20 years in the automobile industry. Frustrated with that lifestyle, he decided to pursue a trucking career, starting with a training program at North American Van Lines. His enthusiasm for the road led him to eventually buy his own truck, hauling auto parts with competitive fuel efficiency today.
In his free time, Szewczyk enjoys camping and connecting with nature alongside his dogs. As he nears retirement, he plans to transition to a slower pace of life, perhaps taking fewer loads and enjoying fishing or traveling. Regardless of his future path, he remains committed to his faith and the company of his dogs.
