Tragic Crash Linked to Illegal Immigrant in California
A 21-year-old undocumented immigrant from India, who entered the U.S. through the southern border in 2022, is now facing charges related to a deadly semi-truck accident in Southern California, according to multiple federal law enforcement sources contacted by Fox News.
The suspect, named Jashanpreet Singh, was initially apprehended by Border Patrol agents in California’s El Centro Sector in March 2022 and was subsequently released into the U.S. while awaiting an immigration hearing.
Recently, Singh was arrested on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated after his truck collided with slow-moving traffic on the I-10 Freeway in San Bernardino County.
The incident, captured on dashcam footage, resulted in at least three fatalities and several injuries. Police reports indicate that Singh did not attempt to brake before crashing into the traffic, which was confirmed by toxicology tests that showed impairment.
Sources from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Singh is not legally in the U.S., and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed an immigration detainer on him following his arrest. Singh was released under the Biden administration’s 2022 policy on “alternatives to detention,” highlighting recurring instances of undocumented immigrants committing crimes after being released pending hearings.
This is not an isolated case; similar incidents have occurred involving undocumented truck drivers. For instance, Harjinder Singh, who illegally crossed the southern border in 2018, reportedly obtained a commercial driver’s license in California and was involved in a crash that killed three people in Florida. Investigators noted he failed English and road sign tests.
The recent crash has drawn criticism towards the Biden administration’s immigration policies. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson remarked on the ongoing consequences of these policies, emphasizing that three innocent lives were lost due to the current immigration system. In response, California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed that the situation is tragic, emphasizing the federal government’s responsibility in permitting Singh’s commercial driver’s license.
