Bamburi Cement and Superior Homes Kenya Eye Screening Initiative
Bamburi Cement, in collaboration with Superior Homes Kenya, is set to conduct a complimentary eye screening campaign for truck drivers at Supastop in Sultan Hamud, Makueni County.
Campaign Details
The campaign, titled “Healthy Eyes, Safer Roads,” is scheduled to take place from October 7 to October 11, 2025. It aims to benefit over 2,000 truck drivers traveling the heavily trafficked Nairobi–Mombasa highway. Participants will undergo eye examinations, receive corrective eyewear such as glasses, and gain valuable health education concerning vision care and overall wellness. By addressing vision issues, the campaign strives to enhance driver health and decrease accidents stemming from vision impairment.
Road Safety Concerns
Data from the 2023 economic survey highlights the critical nature of road safety, revealing that Kenya experienced 4,690 road fatalities in 2022 associated with driver health. Furthermore, a concerning 10.7 percent of drivers who had previously undergone screening were found unfit to drive due to vision-related problems.
Support for Drivers
During the campaign’s launch, Faith Wambui, CSR Coordinator at Superior Homes, emphasized the role of Supastop as a secure, modern facility for drivers. She pointed out that the initiative provides an invaluable opportunity to align with the facility’s mission of promoting driver well-being.
Commitment to Community Safety
“By offering free eye screenings and corrective care, we are supporting not just the transportation community, but also contributing to safer highways for all users,” stated Faith Wambui. “Healthy drivers are essential for safe roads, and good eyesight plays a crucial role in this. This campaign sheds light on an often-neglected aspect of road safety while reinforcing our dedication to meaningful, community-focused impacts.”
Company Perspectives
Mohit Kapoor, CEO of Bamburi Cement PLC, added, “Safety is our top priority. This campaign reflects our commitment to our employees and the community, particularly the truck drivers vital to our operations. By facilitating eye wellness checks, we believe that healthier drivers lead to safer roads, ultimately saving lives and ensuring a safer future for all.”
Collaborative Effort
The ‘Healthy Eyes, Safer Roads’ campaign signifies a significant collaboration between the private sector, government bodies, and the transport community, highlighting Superior Homes Kenya’s role in fostering sustainable community development. Supported by various partners, including the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), County Transport Committee, and Kilome Hospital, this initiative aims to create a safer environment for all road users.
