The Mercedes-Benz Atego: Backbone of THW’s New Equipment Trucks

The Mercedes-Benz Atego serves as the foundation for over 100 new equipment trucks for the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW). The specialized superstructure is crafted by BINZ Automotive GmbH. These new trucks play a crucial role in various emergency operations, including floods, fires, and earthquakes.

Celebrating a Milestone

Leinfelden-Echterdingen/Plauen – Recently, the THW marked the delivery of its 75th Atego equipment truck to coincide with the organization’s 75th anniversary. This special vehicle was allocated to the local Amberg association. The order comprises 120 identical vehicles equipped with specialized features, with an option for the THW to procure up to 60 additional units as needed. These equipment trucks are vital emergency response vehicles for THW rescue teams, boasting all-wheel drive, high payload capacity, and ample storage for essential materials.

A Collaboration for Effective Design

Daimler Truck and BINZ collaborated closely to create a fully integrated vehicle for the THW, blending substantial transport capacity, modern crew accommodations, and tactical flexibility. The Atego equipment truck is pivotal in enhancing the operational efficiency of this disaster relief organization.

Capabilities of the Mercedes-Benz Atego

The latest equipment trucks are constructed on the Mercedes-Benz Atego 1530 AF 4×4 chassis. It features a powerful 6-cylinder diesel engine producing 220 kW (299 hp), with capabilities for navigating rugged terrain due to its all-wheel drive, differential locks, and an 800-millimeter fording depth. The truck has a gross vehicle weight limit of 16 tons and can carry over 3.6 tons, with load distribution over its single front axle and dual rear axles. Additionally, a hydraulic cable winch is fitted for enhanced operational flexibility, capable of a 50 kN pulling force, which can double to 100 kN when the cable is redirected.

BINZ’s Tailored Superstructure

For over 85 years, BINZ has specialized in creating custom vehicles for emergency services, including fire brigades and police. Each vehicle is developed in close consultation with the customer, ensuring that specific requirements are precisely met. This applies to the THW’s new trucks, which are manufactured in Plauen.

Docking Cabin Features

The aluminum superstructure offers durability and protection against corrosion in demanding rescue operations. Its lightweight aluminum design maximizes payload capacity. The new Atego equipment trucks also feature a docking cabin, designed for the first time in this larger version, accommodating seven seats with improved comfort and legroom for the crew. Modern amenities include USB ports, grab handles, three-point seat belts, and holders for helmets and radios. A connecting tunnel facilitates communication between the driver and crew compartments.

Enhanced Emergency Response Capabilities

As a central emergency vehicle for THW rescue teams, the new Atego trucks are equipped to handle a variety of civil protection scenarios, such as building collapses, floods, fires, and earthquakes, both domestically and internationally. Each truck comes with an extensive array of tools for handling wood, metal, and stone, along with portable power generators, pump systems, and essential security materials for first responders. This ensures that THW local associations can effectively deliver material, electricity, and light to incident sites, significantly enhancing their technical and logistical capabilities in crisis management.
