“Hey Nexi, initiate my DVIR.” While voice technology isn’t new, its application in commercial vehicles is just beginning. The effectiveness of an AI driver assistant hinges on its user-friendliness and practical features. Connex2x co-founders, Nick Porrini (CEO) and Joe Zucchero (CTO), emphasized that compliance is a significant area where voice technology can enhance fleet management.

Zucchero explained, “Drivers often neglect to complete their DVIRs, leading to compliance issues. The US DOT has dedicated weeks for compliance checks, costing fleets significantly in fines.”

This is where Nexi, Connex2x’s voice platform, comes into play. Porrini and Zucchero showcased its functionality.

Streamlined DVIRs for Compliance and Safety

Instead of forgoing inspections or submitting incomplete forms, drivers can now verbally complete their DVIRs in everyday language. The platform prompts users with inspection questions, gathers their answers, and enables them to capture photos of vehicle parts such as tires and windshields.

Zucchero stated, “If your profile isn’t linked to a vehicle, it will prompt you to connect one. You can also scan a VIN for automatic data retrieval or enter it manually. Then, Nexi asks inspection questions. Drivers can take photos, which are analyzed by our AI technology, Vision.”

Vision evaluates the images, identifying issues like embedded nails, mismatched tires, cracks, or leaks. By integrating data from the OBD-II port, Nexi creates a comprehensive inspection record, aiding compliance and providing fleet managers with enhanced visibility.

Intelligent Routing with Vehicle-Specific Navigation

Besides compliance, Nexi acts as an in-cab assistant, offering full voice navigation that considers truck-specific restrictions such as bridge heights, weight limits, hazardous material guidelines, and tricky maneuvers unsuitable for large vehicles.

A notable feature is the Green Light Optimization Speed Advisory (GLOSA) system. By accessing live information from over 90,000 traffic signals across North America—expected to reach 200,000 next year, according to Zucchero—Nexi informs drivers on how to adjust their speed to catch green lights. “This leads to significant savings,” Zucchero noted, citing potential fuel efficiency improvements of 6% to 15% through reduced braking and idling.

An AI-Driven Driver Ally

Nexi’s AI capabilities extend beyond just compliance and navigation. It provides real-time updates on vehicle health and driver performance, enabling fleets to enhance training and incentivize safe behaviors. From monitoring abrupt stops to providing performance rankings, the system generates practical insights for managers while offering a tailored experience for drivers.

Porrini added, “When Nexi activates, it greets you by name, saying, ‘Good morning, Jason. How can I assist you?’ We aim for personalization to encourage usage, making it a true co-pilot companion.”
