Last year, I shared my journey shortly after finalizing the modifications on my 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road. The primary aim was to turn my truck into the epitome of a hunting and fishing vehicle, a venture that has taken three years since I relocated from New York to Colorado seeking more chances to pursue elk, mule deer, trout, ducks, and upland birds. I began enhancing my Tacoma soon after acquiring it.
Initially, I focused on essential upgrades like increasing bed space with a cap and implementing a storage system for better gear organization. However, as I navigated the Rocky Mountains, additional ideas emerged. Throughout this transformation, each upgrade has had a specific function aimed at enhancing my outdoor excursions. Now, more than three years later, my Tacoma has undergone a significant transformation from its original state.
The Purpose of My Truck Build
The core purpose lies in hunting and fishing. Each aftermarket addition on my vehicle is strategically chosen to enhance my adventures. Some upgrades were practical, such as a cap and running boards, while others, like a lift kit and roof rack, were driven by my experiences in the backcountry.
I had realizations that certain parts would enable greater access and opportunities, which often translated to improved success in the field. My Tacoma has traversed diverse landscapes—from backcountry elk hunts to various fishing expeditions—accumulating thousands of miles across the western states. This truck has proven to be a robust workhorse, hauling canoes and duck boats, handling challenging terrain with ease.
Lift Kit and Suspension
During the first year and a half, my Tacoma had a factory-level suspension, which worked for most of my outings. However, when I began to explore alpine lakes and rocky trails, I realized a lift kit would enhance my access and confidence. I collaborated with Runnin4Tacos in Denver for suspension solutions.
The Bilstein 6112 front suspension kit forms the foundation of my lift, enhancing ground clearance and compatibility for larger tires. Paired with the Bilstein 5160 rear shock absorbers, they offer excellent control in rugged terrains. The SPC adjustable upper control arms further improve suspension travel, performance, and tire wear, while the Deaver Expedition Series leaf springs contribute to a smoother ride.
Wheels and Tires
After noticing premature wear on my factory tires, I decided to switch from Goodyear 265s to Toyo 285s, which required a suspension upgrade for better clearance. I selected Nomad 503 Sahara wheels, praised for their durability and appearance, along with Toyo Open Country A/T III tires for all-terrain performance.
These tires deliver exceptional handling both on and off-road, proving crucial in muddy conditions where traction was critical. Last November, they enabled me to navigate treacherous, slushy trails unscathed, showcasing their capabilities in challenging environments.
Roof Rack
Several months post-purchase, I installed crossbars, initially used for carrying rod vaults. A pivotal moment arose during hunting season when I needed to transport my canoe. This led to a full roof rack installation from Rhino-Rack, allowing me to easily access remote duck hunting spots.
The Pioneer Platform setup enhances the versatility of my roof rack, which now supports various accessories, including a valuable awning for shade during fishing or cooking sessions. I also included MaxTrax recovery boards for safety, ensuring I can navigate tricky off-road terrains confidently.
