Driving Safety Education in Sioux City
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — New drivers in Siouxland had an opportunity on Thursday to learn crucial road-sharing practices with semi-trucks.
The American Trucking Association visited East High School in Sioux City, teaching young drivers essential safety techniques for maneuvering around large trucks.
According to the association, all drivers should maintain a six-second following distance behind trucks. They also highlighted the importance of being aware of the four blind spots around semi-trucks, advising that if a driver can’t see the truck driver, then the truck driver likely can’t see them.
“It’s incredible to see the change in their perspective when they are in the driver’s seat; their eyes light up, and they leave with a completely different understanding,” stated John Lemmons, American Road Team Captain for Share the Road. “Our goal is to make them feel comfortable around trucks and educate them on appropriate behaviors.”
Lemmons mentioned that they would be visiting North High School in Sioux City on Friday to continue their mission of educating local youth about truck safety.
