Overview of Truck Driver Stress
A recent study by DAT Freight & Analytics indicates that nearly 75% of truck drivers experience significant physical and emotional stress in their jobs.
Insights on Drivers’ Well-Being
Many drivers also reported difficulties in maintaining their overall well-being.
“As we approach National Truck Driver Appreciation Week from September 10-16, it’s important to recognize the challenges truck drivers face in both their personal and professional lives,” stated Jeff Hopper, chief marketing officer at DAT. “We are grateful for everything you do, truck drivers.”
Survey Findings on Work Conditions
A survey involving 504 truck drivers, including 337 owner-operators, shed light on the stressors they encounter on the road.
- Time away from family: 54% of truck drivers spend less than 24 hours at home each week.
- Long work hours: 33% of drivers work over 49 hours a week.
- Dietary habits: 63% prepare meals in their trucks two to six days a week; 37% resort to fast food two to three days a week.
- Sleep challenges: 63% sleep six hours or less per night, and 38% use medication to aid their sleep.
Mental Health Management
The survey also looked into how truck drivers handle their mental health.
Nearly 46% of participants indicated that access to mental health services could effectively help manage stress. However, only 40% of male drivers would consider talking to a counselor or therapist about their feelings, compared to 58% of female drivers.
Family Dynamics and Career Choices
Families often find it challenging to relate to the lifestyle of truck driving. More than 71% of truckers’ children did not choose to pursue a similar career, even after accompanying their parents on the road when younger.
Challenges in the Trucking Profession
“Many truck drivers develop strategies to cope with the long hours, isolation, and health issues associated with their work,” Hopper remarked. “However, finding proper sleeping arrangements, nutritious meals, and other basic needs remains a constant struggle. It’s crucial to acknowledge the essential role truckers play in our economy and to honor their hard work.”
