A 21-year-old truck driver of Indian descent has been apprehended in California following a crash influenced by drugs that resulted in three fatalities and four injuries.
California: Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old man of Indian origin, has been arrested in connection with a tragic accident on California’s 10 Freeway, which resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left at least four others injured.
Reports suggest that Singh, who is believed to be a Sikh, illegally immigrated to the US in 2022. He was operating a heavy truck while under the influence of drugs when the incident took place. The crash, which occurred in Ontario, California, was recorded on dashcam video showing Singh’s truck colliding with several vehicles.
Witnesses and law enforcement reported that the truck was speeding before it lost control and collided with multiple cars. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but unfortunately, three individuals were declared dead at the scene, and four others were seriously injured and transported to local hospitals.
Authorities have confirmed that Singh is in custody facing multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. Investigators are also looking into his immigration status and potential violations related to commercial driving regulations.
This distressing incident has reignited discussions around road safety and drug use among commercial drivers in the U.S., especially along major routes like the 10 Freeway.
The crash took place during the early morning hours, resulting in a multi-vehicle pile-up that blocked traffic for several hours. Preliminary toxicology tests showed Singh was under the influence of controlled substances at the time of the crash.
Singh, who reportedly entered the U.S. illegally three years ago, was working informally in the trucking industry. Concerns have been raised in the media about the risks posed by unlicensed or inadequately trained drivers in freight networks. Dashcam footage of the incident has circulated widely on social media, prompting a joint investigation by the California Highway Patrol and local prosecutors.
Authorities are urging any witnesses to come forward as the investigation continues. This tragedy adds to recent incidents involving commercial drivers, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of substance testing and adherence to immigration laws within the trucking industry.
