Good Morning, Friends!
Back in 2013, while interning at CNN in Atlanta, I had the opportunity to write about a truck driver named John Drury.
During the weekdays, Drury dedicated 50 hours to driving, but come the weekend, this towering 6-foot-7 driver transformed into a certified dance fitness instructor, having lost nearly 100 pounds through his love for dance. At the time, he was on a profound weight-loss journey, recently tipping the scales at 400 pounds. He was also on medication to manage high blood pressure and cholesterol.
The reality of his situation struck hard when a fellow truck driver, who shared similar health struggles, passed away from diabetes complications in late 2010. This prompted Drury to hit the gym, where he discovered Zumba and realized he could blend his passion for dance with weight loss. Consequently, he established his own dance fitness company named Big John’s Dance Fitness.
Drury began guiding others toward their weight-loss goals through dance routines set to popular songs from artists like Usher, Rihanna, and Flo Rida. He hosted hour-long sessions every Saturday and Sunday, charging $5 per class, often at his home where he welcomed up to 30 participants. However, financial challenges arose as he had to cut back his driving hours from 70 to 50 per week to focus on this new lifestyle.
“I can’t think of a male truck driver anywhere out there doing what I’m doing,” he told me. “I’m breaking all the stereotypes. Dance fitness is my passion, my calling.”
Recently, I found myself reflecting on John Drury and wondered how his journey had evolved over the past decade. A quick search online revealed that he now carries the title “The Dancing Trucker,” boasting 216,000 Instagram followers and racking up 15.3 million views on his TikTok dance videos. He’s been highlighted on platforms like Barstool Sports, interviewed by Steve Harvey, and recognized by fans in various public places.
Seeing that he fulfilled his dreams and continues dancing 10 years later brought me joy. This is the beauty of profiling individuals — you briefly participate in a stranger’s journey and, thanks to the internet, witness how it unfolds.
