Frustration and Inspiration
Patterson Hood, co-frontman of Drive-By Truckers, has been grappling with intense frustration over the political climate, particularly with Donald Trump’s rise to power. Although his previous album, American Band, was politically charged, he spent months finding the right words to express his feelings. A pivotal moment occurred when white supremacists marched in Charlottesville, leading to the tragic death of a counter-protester and Trump’s insistence that there were “very fine people” among them, prompting Hood to finally articulate his emotions.
The Creation of “The Perilous Night”
The new song, “The Perilous Night,” captures the disillusionment felt by many as individuals justify the unjustifiable. The band began performing it immediately during tours and released a studio version on the first Election Day since the tumultuous events of the past year, urging listeners to vote.
A Move to Portland
I spoke with Hood at his home in Portland, Oregon, where he relocated with his family from Athens, Georgia, two and a half years ago. While attending to his daughter’s recovery from spinal surgery, he shared insights into his songwriting journey and reflections on America.
Writing Challenges
Discussing “The Perilous Night,” Hood mentioned the difficulty he faced while writing it. Although his band has always had political themes, the current situation in the U.S. overwhelmed him, making it hard to tackle in a nuanced manner. The urgency grew after the Charlottesville incident when he finally completed the song, which resonated well during a live performance in Santa Monica shortly after its completion.
Urgency of Release
Hood explained the motivation behind releasing a single shortly after an album, indicating a desire to address pressing issues through his music. He doesn’t intend for this song to be part of the next album; he hopes for a change in direction, focusing on personal themes rather than political ones.
Direct Political Commentary
The song explicitly names public figures like Trump and Putin, reflecting a shift towards direct commentary rather than allegorical writing that Hood had often employed in the past. He acknowledges mixed reactions from fans regarding the political stances expressed in their music but remains resolute in expressing his truth.
A New Direction in Songwriting
Looking forward, Hood said he hopes to explore more personal subjects in his upcoming work, steering away from repetitive themes. After a year of feeling uninspired, he’s excited to write again and emphasizes the importance of contributing something new to the conversation without rehashing old material.
