For those skeptical about the arrival of severe weather season, recent events in the eastern U.S. in mid-March prove otherwise. During a span of three days, almost 100 tornadoes were observed across 13 states from the Great Plains to Pennsylvania, tragically resulting in over 40 fatalities. Some tornadoes were so intense they uprooted buildings, severing the iron rods that anchored them.

Tornadoes: Nature’s Most Ferocious Storms

Tornadoes are classified as some of the planet’s most fierce atmospheric phenomena and can occur in all 50 states in the U.S. The region commonly referred to as “Tornado Alley”—located between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River—faces the highest likelihood of tornado formation, particularly in spring when warm, moist air from the Gulf collides with cold arctic air moving southward. This area also sees heavy traffic from long-haul truck drivers on its interstates.

Keeping Safety First

Tornadoes possess the capability to hurl an 18-wheeler with ease. When encountering a tornado while on the road, the priority must be the driver’s life, not the cargo. So, what should truckers do when navigating through the heart of tornado-prone areas?

Preparation Tips

Preparation plays a crucial role in ensuring safety during severe weather seasons. All truck cabs should be fitted with a NOAA weather radio, which should be kept on at all times, even during clear weather. These radios provide alerts for severe weather, especially useful during tornado season. Though mobile apps can serve a similar function, NOAA radios cover all regions on a single frequency, ensuring consistent updates regardless of location.

Understanding Weather Alerts

Familiarity with the terminology used by the National Weather Service for tornado alerts is essential. The two key terms are “tornado watch” and “tornado warning.” A tornado watch signifies conditions are favorable for tornado formation, affecting various counties across states. It’s important to note that a watch doesn’t indicate that a tornado is imminent. In contrast, a tornado warning indicates that a tornado has been sighted or confirmed by radar, posing an immediate threat to life.

Actions During Tornado Alerts

During a tornado watch, truckers should stay vigilant, monitoring the weather radio and observing the skies for signs of forming storms such as darkened areas, low-hanging clouds, and rotating formations. In the event of a tornado warning, the immediate action should be to exit the road and seek shelter in sturdy buildings like truck stops or malls. If no safe location is available, finding a ditch to lie in while covering one’s head is the safest alternative.

Avoiding Common Mistakes

There are critical safety measures to keep in mind when facing a tornado. Attempting to outrun or outmaneuver a tornado is futile, as their unpredictable paths can make this dangerous. Additionally, parking under an overpass is not advisable, as it can create a life-threatening wind tunnel effect. Finally, if traffic slows, it’s wise not to push through if others are stopping, as they are likely reacting to hazardous conditions. Tornadoes are fleeting events; thus, being prepared can save lives.
