Truck Drivers Arrested for Smuggling Drugs into Canada
Two truck drivers of Indian descent have been apprehended in Canada for allegedly smuggling illegal drugs worth millions across the U.S.-Canada border at Michigan-Sarnia. Karan Owaan, 24, of Kingston, and Gagandeep Singh Gharil, 32, from Brampton, were arrested on October 18 and face charges of importing methamphetamine into Canada and possessing it with intent to distribute.
Bail Granted Under Restrictions
According to reports, Owaan has already been granted bail, although the specifics surrounding this decision are subject to a temporary publication ban. His next court date is scheduled for early December.
Conditions of Bail
Owaan was released on an $85,000 bail, required to wear a GPS tracker, and his sureties needed to provide a $30,000 deposit. Under the bail conditions, he will reside under house arrest with two sureties in Brampton and is prohibited from interacting with his co-defendant.
Travel and Internet Restrictions
As part of the bail terms, Owaan must surrender all passports and travel documents to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and cannot apply for new ones. He is also restricted from being within 100 meters of any airport or international border, and is not permitted to use electronic devices to access the internet unless supervised by his sureties.
Co-Accused Remains in Custody
Gharil, on the other hand, is still in custody, with a bail hearing set for November 17.
Previous Sentences for Drug Trafficking
This situation follows another incident where two Indian-origin truck drivers were sentenced to 10 years in prison for smuggling $11 million worth of cocaine into Canada three years ago. Vikram Dutta, 44, and Gurinder Singh, 61, were discovered with 115 kilograms of cocaine in their truck at the crossing between Michigan and the Sarnia area on December 11, 2022.
Drug Trafficking Route
The Sarnia border, linking Port Huron in Michigan to Sarnia in Ontario, has increasingly become a significant route for drug trafficking.
