Truck Driver Survives Dramatic Fire Incident on I-65
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A semi-truck driver who experienced a fire while driving near the Kennedy Bridge on Friday morning emerged with only minor injuries. He is now recounting his harrowing experience exclusively to WDRB News.
Close Call After Crash
“I’m lucky to be alive,” shared Jeffery Walker. “Just moments after I escaped the truck, it erupted in flames.”
Walker has frequently driven through Louisville and was shocked when his routine drive turned into an emergency following a crash that led to the fire.
Accident Details and Emergency Response
According to a MetroSafe supervisor, the accident was reported at 10:14 a.m. Friday involving a single-vehicle incident on Interstate 65. Eyewitnesses recounted hearing explosions around the time of the accident.
Desperate Escape from Flames
Thick black smoke engulfed the area, with flames climbing up the sides of the semi while Walker was trapped inside. “I couldn’t get the doors or windows open; nothing worked. I was searching for something to shatter the window but found nothing,” he recounted. The flames rose even higher as panic set in.
Narrow Escape and Aftermath
Ultimately, Walker escaped by forcefully kicking open the passenger door. He managed to slide down the trailer and jump, landing 20 feet below. “I kept thinking, ‘I don’t want to die; I don’t want to burn,'” he said.
Though he sustained minor injuries, he was relieved to have escaped just before the semi crashed to the ground. “I was blessed to get out of the way,” Walker commented.
Injuries and Future Concerns
Walker has a broken ankle, currently in a cast, along with injuries to his back, hip, and elbow. He is scheduled for surgery in three weeks but has already been released from University Hospital. He plans to return home to Arkansas with his wife, eager to reunite with family.
Safety Alert and Investigation
Walker, the family’s sole provider, expressed concern about missing work during his recovery. He is contemplating whether he will drive a semi again. “I’m definitely thinking twice about that,” he remarked. Mayor Craig Greenberg stated the semi was empty during the incident, but the cause is still under investigation. The Louisville Metro Police Traffic Unit is leading the inquiry, with plans to assess nearby surveillance footage.
Community Support and Advice
As officials work toward enhancing safety on the I-65 corridor following multiple crashes in the area, Walker advises fellow drivers to exercise caution. “They need to be careful on that road,” he urged. If you wish to support Walker and his family, a GoFundMe page has been set up.
